COURSE OBJECTIVE

Malnutrition is a significant and common problem among the elderly, yet it can easily be resolved by understanding how nutritional requirements change as we age. Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to identify the symptoms of malnutrition so that changes to the diet can be made, either at home or in a care setting, to help encourage weight gain and improve the nutrition of the older people to promote health and well-being. 

COURSE CONTENT

What will I learn?

  • Effects of Aging on the Digestive System and its inter-relationship with other systems such as the Endocrine System
  • Understand the cause of poor nutrition among the ageing population.
  • Identify the nutritional requirements of the older persons
  • Understand the causes, symptoms and treatment of malnutrition.
  • Understand the importance of encouraging weight gain when older persons are suffering from malnutrition.
  • Know how to fortify some common foods in the diet to improve their nutritional and calorific content.
